Turn Mechanically-Bound Products into Display Pieces

Mechanically-bound products offer great design versatility. Their ability to open 360 degrees makes it easy to create a multifunction product. By adding an easel cover, Wire-O, plastic spiral and spiral wire-bound books and calendars can be used as effective display pieces.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind when planning a mechanically-bound book to include an easel:

Easels Options
Easels can take several different formats when incorporated into a mechanically-bound book. A die-cut wing easel offers plenty of support for standard size applications. At Coyne Graphic Finishing, we create wing easels by die cutting a piece of board or other thick substrate. The board is then collated as the back cover of the book, punched and bound. For larger products, one or two wing easels can be glued to the back cover of a piece. With either design, the easel stays flat until activated by the end user.

For heavier books, go with a tent-shaped easel for stronger support. This easel style is created by punching two ends of a piece of board, which is then scored three times in the middle. The user activates the easel by unfolding the section between the scores, creating a wedge-shaped easel that can support even the thickest books.

Planning Tip
Easels require sufficient thickness and rigidity to support a book when opened. Most applications require easels constructed of at least 60 to 120 pt. board. Thicker substrates, such as corrugated board, may be required for extremely large applications.
