Take Time for Tinning

2008 may still be almost half a year away. But if you're in the calendar business, 2008 is right around the corner. And the planning you do now—from concept to design to printing to finishing and packaging—can be critical to the efficient and cost-effective production of your 2008 calendar.

This is particularly true when the finishing process involves tinning. When a calendar consists of only a single large sheet (or a set of a few sheets), no one sheet is sufficient for mechanical binding. Nor is it generally thick enough for punching.

One practical finishing solution is tinning. In this process, a pre-cut tin strip is wrapped and crimped around one or both ends of a single sheet. The tin prevents corners and edges from curling, and allows the printed sheet to hang flat. The result is a calendar that’s easy to hang and use all year long.

But in terms of calendar production, a lot has to happen before the tinning process comes into play. So what's the rush?

Consider this: Calendar tins must be specially ordered in pre-cut lengths for your project. Orders for material are fulfilled on a first-come, first-served basis. If the material isn't ordered early enough, waiting for tins will necessarily extend the production schedule. In fact, planning ahead, and involving Coyne early on in the production planning, is the best way to assure that the finishing goes smoothly and at the best possible price.
